Le Deli Corner, Tulse Hill, Brixton

Gallery Wall Project - November 2017

My friend Claire Dorey is the curator of the 'Gallery Wall Project' at Le Deli Corner (owned by Stephane Carlinet), each month a new artist exhibits their work on the walls of this cosy little cafe in Tulse Hill. I have been invited by Claire to exhibit some of my paintings throughout November. If you are in the area please drop by to have a look and sample the delicious food and drinks - including breakfast, lunches and french pastries. According to one reviewer: "an exceptional chef, friendly staff and the best coffee in town :)"

Swimming in Sunshine

'Swimming in Sunshine' - acrylic with gesso and varnish, on 4x4ft canvas.

This painting, completed on 30th January 2017, was auctioned on 11th February to raise money for The Bequia United Swim Club with the help of Action Bequia.

A sea dreamscape showing the silhouette of a man's head imposed over a tropical sea - on the right hand side a flow of deep sea with rough images of dark figures and shapes in motion flowing into his dream and on the left hand side calm sunset sea illuminated by dream colour lights. Overhead a big stylised sun with fiery tentacles flowing out through sky blue and puffy clouds.

I tried to capture the brilliant colours of the Caribbean and Rastafarian red white and green. The dots are from my aboriginal dreamtime painting tradition with the link to this dream of sunshine - child-like big sun and blue sky happiness. It's a joyful naive painting of the islands flow of water, sea, sky and light. Thus the title, Swimming in Sunshine.

December 2016

St Leonards, Neanderthal Removal Men, and a Distraught Cat

I will start at the beginning as Paula and I have just moved to the south coast - St Leonards-on-Sea. Despite moving on the coldest day of the year, having a distraught cat, Neanderthal removal men, a boiler that doesn't work and boxes in every room (but not the right ones) we are very happy to be by the sea.

Every evening has seen a dramatic sunset, the light is incredible and I understand why the locals say 'big sky'. Tendrils of inspiration tugging at my busy feet - it's going to be big down here and once I find my paints I will set at it with colour and mucho gusto.

2016 has been a real transition year, with 6 months off from corporate craziness during a truly beautiful spring and English summer. Plenty of time to create my show at the fabulous Framers Gallery in Fitzrovia, travel slow TV style in Morocco and the West Highlands, and to generally catch up with the rest of my life, friends, family and reconnect with heart and spirit through some meditation and Bikram yoga.

Lastly - 'For One Day Only' - a show with my truly wonderful friend Cecil Rice and three other artists at the amazing Hove & Brighton Progressive Synagogue space. A great if tiring day (in the middle of moving house) meeting some great locals and selling some art.

So although we are quickly arriving at the end of the year I really feel that I am at the beginning of a whole new adventure. 2017 is going to be 'big sky' indeed.

Wishing all of you peace, warmth and joy in these bad craziness times, as my esteemed doctor Hunter S Thompson would say.

See you on the other side,

Simon
